Wednesday Afternoon

After yesterday morning, ideally I would have had a relaxing afternoon sitting poolside at the Sheraton sipping on a daquiri with an umbrella in it, but it was not to be.

Stu and I had an all-american lunch of grilled cheese/hamburger, fries, and a coke, and I treated myself to a Snickers bar.  We shot off a quick email to Rick and then headed to the mission where we were set to give a tour to a group of HS students from the states.  It was a good tour and we were led around the compound by one of the workers who took us into the TB/HIV isolation ward, which was my first time up there.   After the tour, Stu and I went next door to pick up Zack and Katie, our friends who work for the Cherokee foundation.  Zack still had work to finish, but Katie joined us for a delicious chemaki and then we went to Addis Ababa University's Yared School of Music senior concert.

On tuesday, Zack and I were having a macchiato when we struck up a conversation with the guy sitting next to us.  Turns out he's a professor at the Yared music school (teaches contrabass, classical guitar, and piano), and he invited us to the their senior concert.  I believe that Yared is the only degree music program in the country and it is located across the street from the mission.  Katie, Stu, and I were the only white people in the 400-person (+200 standing) auditorium and we heard 10 great pieces of jazz from a very talented group of 10-15 graduating seniors.  It was one of those great, off-the-beaten path activities that most people who come here never get to experience.

I then had dinner with a family friend who has worked in Addis for the last few years for World Learning Ethiopia, a leading education NGO.  He took me to the Armenian Club for delicious shish kabobs and lively discussion of education policy both in Africa and the US.  After dinner I developed a mean migraine and called it a night.

Today started with a relaxing morning of internet and I am now heading over to the mission to give another tour and do some work.  This afternoon I'll go see our patient at Black Lion, maybe stop by the Sheraton to christen their bathroom, and possibly another massage.  Tonight is Zack's last night in Ethiopia and in addition to the obligatory farewall feast, we might hit up a jazz club or maybe just some good 'ole Ethiopian barhoppin'...who knows if we'll have enough time?
